Sberbank becomes the largest acquirer in Europe

In 2016, Sberbank handled 7.5 billion transactions across its merchant acquiring network

According to the research company The Nilson Report, Sberbank has become the largest acquirer in Europe. In 2016, Sberbank handled 7.5 billion transactions across its merchant acquiring network. In one year, this figure rose by 41%. The study has taken into account data on Sberbank’s business within Russia.

Worldpay payment system is in second place among the top European acquirers (7.23 billion transactions) with the third spot held by Barclays Bank (5.06 billion transactions).

In 2011 Sberbank was 12th in The Nilson Report’s similar ranking, and a year later it climbed to 6th place (1.3 billion transactions). In 2014 Sberbank moved it into Europe’s top three acquirers (3.6 billion transaction), and in 2015 it rose to second place (5.3 billion transactions).

Also in 2016, Sberbank entered the rankings of the top Internet acquirers’ — in one year over 100 million of purchases were made in online stores thanks to Sberbank. In Russia, Sberbank is ranked first by this metric.

The Nilson Report takes into account transactions that were completed at the points of sale, online, via mobile phones connected to the Internet and via apps.

The report’s authors attribute Sberbank’s rise through the ranks to an increase in contactless payments as well as expanded card acceptance on the public transportation system across Russia.

"In our acquiring strategy, we have focused on the service and infrastructure development. We have created a centralized technical support for acquiring customers, implemented uniform service standards across all regions, created a client web-service to address accounting and IT issues, automated most of the processes and managed to reduce the time period required to connect new customers to acquiring,” noted Svetlana Kirsanova, Senior Managing Director of Sberbank’s Retail Business block. “In terms of infrastructure development, we have upgraded our hardware fleet thus ensuring acceptance of payments via contactless technology in an overwhelming percentage (74%) of our POS terminals. Currently, Sberbank’s fleet exceeds 1.1 million POS terminals. All of this has allowed our customers (both merchants and cardholders) to change their attitude to the acquiring service as a whole, which is reflected particularly on our transactional activity figures."

The Nilson Report carries out research on the bank card and payment industry globally, and publishes a same-name magazine recognized by the market players. The company has been operating for 46 years.
