True innovation? Make your ideas useful!

Make your ideas useful!

Around 50 participants from Sberbank of Russia, Sberbank Europe and its CEE subsidiaries gathered last summer for a two-day Retail & Innovation workshop at Sberbank Europe head office in Vienna. The workshop was moderated by Max McKeown, author of “The Innovation Book” and a popular keynote speaker on strategy, adaptability and innovation. “Stability is an illusion. The future will happen whether or not you shape it. However, you don’t need to wait until it happens. You can shape a better future if you understand how the future trends emerge,” he stated, encouraging the participants to discuss how Sberbank and its employees can contribute to shape the future of banking. He continued: “You have to be open to new opportunities, new possibilities so that you can take advantage of them. Strategy is about knowing where you are now and where you want to go.”

Igor Kolomeysky, Senior Vice President and Head of Sberbank International, who hosted the event, asked the audience to take a more entrepreneurial and less bureaucratic view when thinking about how to further develop the bank's products and services to meet customers’ changing needs and expectations. “I would like all of us to think who we would like to be,” he added.

Retail contributes 42% to Sberbank Europe’s profit

Since Sberbank's acquisition of Volksbank International in 2012, Sberbank Europe has managed to turn its Retail business into a profitable and stable income stream for the banking group. At the end of 2016, Sberbank Europe Group's Retail business achieved a net profit of €13.7 million, contributing 42% to Sberbank Europe’s overall net profit. By 2020, Sberbank Europe aims to increase this share to 60%. “Retail is our backbone and the core business of our markets. Our strategic priorities for this segment include further growing our customer base, strengthening consumer lending and restarting micro-business, all with a strong focus on further developing our digital proposition, making banking as easy and accessible as possible for our customers,” said Gerhard Randa, CEO of Sberbank Europe. Having recognized the changing needs of its customers, Sberbank Europe expects that almost half of its new products or services will be managed via its digital platform by 2020.

Max McKeown closed the inspiring workshop by pointing out that in business, it is not enough to have a good idea: “You need to make your idea work. That is an invention. But if you make your idea useful as well, that is true innovation.”
